2009 Toyota Highlander Gets New Four-Cylinder:
As TheCarConnection.com reports, the 2009 Toyota Highlander gets a significant boost in fuel efficiency courtesy of a new 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed auto that team to give this SUV an EPA-estimated economy of 20/27 mpg. For a vehicle with a curb weight of about two tons, 187 horsepower isn't going to win races, but drivers these days are more into sipping fuel than they are into drag-strip wars. And the Highlander four-cylinder's economy ratings are impressive for the category, no doubt.
Toyota was wise to make this engine torque-heavy, giving it a long-bore design that yields the kind of torque that makes moving 4,000 lb possible without seeming stressed. In addition to the long stroke, the engine features Toyota's Dual VVT-i, variable-length intake runners, and a dual exhaust manifold to further boost low-end torque. This engine will happily run on regular unleaded all day long while also being certified by the EPA as an Ulta Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEVII).
For those customers who occasionally tow, Toyota does offer a package that will enable the Highlander four-cylinder to pull 3,500 lb. But if you two often or simply have a lead foot that can't wait 9.7 seconds for 60 mpg to arrive, you can always opt for Toyota's fleet 3.5-liter V-6, which will net you a still-respectable 18/24 mpg from the EPA.
